Forks of the Credit Hiking Day Trip from Toronto

$20 ticket to celebrate 20 years of the Greenbelt
Just an hour north of Toronto, Forks of the Credit Provincial Park is where the Niagara Escarpment gets dramatic—think rolling meadows that suddenly drop into limestone gorges, waterfalls tucked into river valleys, and fall colors so vibrant you'll understand why people plan their whole autumn around them.
This trip is in partnership with the Greenbelt Foundation, and we're celebrating two decades of protecting the green spaces that make the Greater Golden Horseshoe breathable. The Greenbelt is a 2-million-acre swath of protected farmland, forests, wetlands, and watersheds that wraps around the GTA—including Forks of the Credit. It's what keeps urban sprawl from swallowing places like this, ensuring that trails, rivers, and open spaces stay accessible for everyone. This hike is a chance to experience exactly what 20 years of protection has preserved.
This isn't one of those "follow the guide in single file" kind of days. ActiveDays is all about creating your own connection with the outdoors. We'll meet as a group, chat about the trails, and then you decide: stick with the crew for the full loop to Cataract Falls, take the shorter meadow route around Kettle Lake, or find your own pace somewhere in between. There's no pressure to perform—just space to breathe, wander, and maybe swap trail snacks with someone who becomes a friend.
What Makes This Place Special:
The Falls & the River - Cataract Falls might not be Niagara, but that's kind of the point. It's intimate, tucked into the Credit River gorge with old mill ruins nearby that whisper stories of when this was a booming quarry town. The stone from here built Old City Hall and Queen's Park—so yeah, you've probably seen this place before without knowing it.
Escarpment Views - Parts of the Bruce Trail wind through the park, taking you up sandy ridges and down wooden staircases into the valley. The elevation changes aren't killer, but they're enough to earn your picnic lunch and give you those "wow, I'm actually outside" views over the tree canopy.
Trail Variety for Every Vibe - Feeling adventurous? Take the loop that includes some moderate climbs through forested hillsides. Want it mellow? The Trans Canada Trail section is flat, wide, and perfect for walking side-by-side with a new friend while you figure out your shared love of mediocre hiking snacks.
