What happens during the alpaca visit?
You'll join a guided tour into the alpaca pasture where you can get up close with the herd. The farm provides a special grain treat for hand-feeding, and your guide will answer all your alpaca questions. While these animals are naturally a bit shy and won't cuddle, most are happy to be petted—if they're in the mood.
What should I wear?
Closed-toe shoes are essential (no high heels). The entire alpaca experience takes place outdoors on a working farm, so dress for the weather and be prepared for potentially dusty or muddy conditions depending on recent weather.
Are children welcome?
Absolutely. The farm experience is family-friendly and suitable for all ages. Children under 2 typically visit free.
What about the hiking portion?
We'll explore trails at Belwood Lake Conservation Area, which offers approximately 3.3 km of forested paths with views overlooking the reservoir and the Grand River valley. The Elora Cataract Trailway also runs through the area, crossing the impressive Shand Dam—Canada's first dam built solely for water control. Trails range from easy flat sections to moderate terrain with some elevation.
How difficult is the hiking?
The trails offer options for various fitness levels. The rail trail sections are flat and accessible, while the woodland loops have gentle to moderate elevation changes. Your trip leader will guide the group to trails appropriate for participants.
Is there a shop at the farm?
Yes, Harmony Meadows has a farm store selling alpaca fibre products including socks, mittens, scarves, headwear, blankets, and yarn. Alpaca fibre is naturally soft, warm, and breathable—perfect for Ontario winters.
What facilities are available?
The farm has washroom facilities in their store. Belwood Lake Conservation Area also has washrooms and picnic areas available.
What if the weather is bad?
The alpaca visit happens rain or shine since it's entirely outdoors. Dress appropriately for the forecast. In cases of severe weather, trip adjustments may be made.
