Guided Trip

Killarney Guided Day Trip

Leave the City Behind. Way Behind.

Take a guided trip with Parkbus to Killarney Provincial Park.

See Mountains Older Than the Rockies, Lakes That Look Photoshopped, and Trees That Were Standing When Your Grandparents Were Born.

The La Cloche Mountains run through the park like a white spine. They're 1.88 billion years old, made of quartzite that was once taller than the Rockies before a few ice ages had their way. They glow white in the sun. The interior lakes sit so clear you can see eight metres down, and the pink granite shores of Georgian Bay look like someone spilled the sunset. You'll walk through red oak, white pine, and birch. You'll cross boardwalks where pitcher plants and sundew grow alongside cranberry. The Granite Ridge Trail climbs to lookouts where the view splits in half: La Cloche peaks to the north, Georgian Bay islands rolling south. It looks exactly like a Group of Seven painting because, well.

Why Most Torontonians Have Never Been (And Why That's About to Change for You)

Killarney is 400 km northwest of Toronto. It's a four-and-a-half-hour drive each way. The park wasn't reachable by road at all until 1962. The logistics of getting there, hiking, and getting back in a single day, after working all week, with a rental car and a plan, is the kind of thing you keep meaning to do for a decade.

So we put it on a bus.

We Drive. You Just Show Up With a Lunch and Good Shoes.

We handle the route, the park permits, and the guide. Sleep on the way up. Read. Look out the window. By the time we cross the French River, the city feels like a rumour.

What Six Hours in Killarney Actually Looks Like

It's a long day. We're not going to pretend otherwise. But once we arrive, you've got hours to work with:

  • A guided hike on Granite Ridge or Chikanishing, depending on conditions and group pace. Both are moderate. Both end at views that stop conversation for a minute.
  • The chance to swim off warm pink granite slabs in Georgian Bay (water temperature in your control, courage not included).
  • Lunch on a rock somewhere, with no notifications and no email autoresponder to draft.
  • Time at George Lake, where the Group of Seven painted from canoes and where you can wade in and float for as long as you want.
  • A guide who knows the trees, the rocks, and which lookout has the best light at 3 PM, not just the trail map.
  • A four-and-a-half-hour ride home in which you will, almost certainly, fall asleep with sand in your shoes. This is not a downside.

Solo Travellers Make Up Most of This Bus. By Lunch, You'll Know a Few Names.

ActiveDays is built so solo travel doesn't feel like solo travel. It doesn't matter if you're coming alone, dragging a friend, or showing up with the partner who said "fine, but no camping." There's something about arriving somewhere remote together, by bus, without the buffer of your own car, that breaks down the usual stranger script faster than you'd expect. Hike with the group. Sit on a rock and read. Try the longer trail or stick close to the shore. Everyone has their own relationship with the outdoors, and we want to meet you where you're at.

Meet Your Guide and Half the Bus Before You Leave the City

We run an ActiveDays Facebook group where travellers connect ahead of the trip. Ask gear questions, find out who's coming, get a feel for your guide. It's a quiet, useful little community, and it means the day starts well before you board.
