What is Ignite the Night?
Ignite the Night is a self-guided experience along a brightly lit winter trail where visitors can follow interpretive signage to connect with nature and learn about trees in a new way. Caledon Citizen The forest is transformed with fire features and lights that create an enchanting atmosphere you won't find anywhere else near Toronto.
What's included in this trip?
Your ticket includes round-trip bus transportation from downtown Toronto, a Parkbus-led guided group hike from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, admission to the Ignite the Night event from 6:30 to 8:45 pm, and park entry fees. Everything's covered—just show up ready to explore.
What happens on the guided hike?
Your Parkbus guide will lead the group along Terra Cotta Lane, a scenic loop trail around Wolf Lake, before the Ignite the Night event begins. It's a chance to stretch your legs after the bus ride, get oriented to the park, and start chatting with fellow adventurers. Once the lights come on at 6:30, you're free to explore the illuminated trails at your own pace.
What activities are available during the event?
The main attraction is the illuminated two-kilometre forest trail, which you can explore on foot at your leisure. Depending on winter conditions, you may also be able to snowshoe, cross-country ski, or hike additional trails. One hour ice skating rink rental reservations are available at the Wetland Pavilion from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Credit Valley Conservation if you want to add skating to your evening. Note that you'll need to bring your own winter activity equipment as rentals are not available.
Is there food available?
Yes! The Park Store will be open where you can purchase hot drinks and snacks to warm up between trail explorations. There's nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a steaming cup while surrounded by glowing forest trails.
What should I bring?
Headlamps or flashlights are recommended, even with the illuminated trails. Dress in warm layers appropriate for spending several hours outdoors in February evening temperatures. Waterproof winter boots with good traction are essential. If you plan to skate, snowshoe, or ski, bring your own equipment.
How difficult is the guided hike?
The guided hike follows Terra Cotta Lane, a relatively flat and accessible trail that loops around Wolf Lake. It's suitable for most fitness levels and a relaxed way to ease into the evening before the main event.
What if the weather is bad?
The event is subject to change or cancellation due to inclement weather. We'll communicate any changes as soon as we're notified. Keep an eye on your email and our social channels leading up to the trip date.
Where exactly is Terra Cotta Conservation Area?
Terra Cotta is nestled in the Niagara Escarpment in Halton Hills, about an hour from downtown Toronto. The 485-acre park features mature forests, streams, ponds, and wetlands, and connects to the legendary Bruce Trail network.
What time will we return to Toronto?
The bus departs Terra Cotta at 9:00 pm and returns to the Asquith Avenue pickup point, typically arriving back in Toronto by around 10:00 pm depending on traffic conditions.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
This is actually one of the best trips to do solo. The ActiveDays format is designed for meeting people, and the combination of a group hike followed by free exploration time gives you plenty of opportunities to connect with others—or enjoy some peaceful solo time in the glowing forest. Your call.
