What is Maple Syrup in the Park?

It's Credit Valley Conservation's annual maple syrup festival at Terra Cotta Conservation Area. You'll see how maple syrup has been made through the ages — from Indigenous methods to settler techniques to modern sugar shacks — through live, interactive demonstrations spread across the park. There's also wagon rides to the sugarbush, a trackless train ride (new for 2026!), entertainment, giant games, face painting, and a pancake breakfast with real maple syrup.

What's included with the trip?

Your Parkbus ticket includes round-trip transportation from Toronto and festival admission. The guided hike is part of the ActiveDays experience. Pancake breakfast and Park Store purchases are available on-site at additional cost.

What happens at the festival?

There's a lot going on. You'll follow demonstrations at different stations: the Sweetwater Discovery explores Indigenous syrup-making traditions, Settled into Spring covers settler-era techniques, the Tool Shoppe shows traditional and modern equipment, and the Sugar Shack demonstrates current production. In between, you can hop on a wagon ride to the sugarbush, ride the new trackless train, catch a magic or puppet show, try the Maple Mystery Challenge, walk the maple-themed storybook trail, and visit the Fireside Chats area to learn about Indigenous connections to the land.

What about the guided hike?

Your ActiveDays guide will lead the group through Terra Cotta's trail network, which winds through mature forests, streams, ponds, and wetlands along the Niagara Escarpment. The trails range from easy to moderate, and your guide will keep the pace comfortable for the group. You can join the full hike or break off to explore at your own pace — no pressure either way.

How difficult are the trails?

Terra Cotta has trails ranging from flat, accessible paths to moderate forest trails with some elevation changes. The guided hike is designed to be enjoyable for most fitness levels. Expect a mix of maintained paths and natural surfaces. The park sits on 485 acres of Escarpment terrain, so there are options for everyone.

What should I wear and bring?

Dress in layers — March weather in Ontario can swing from crisp mornings to mild afternoons, and you'll be outside for most of the day. Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear since trails can be muddy during spring thaw. Bring a reusable water bottle, a small daypack, and cash or card for food and maple syrup purchases. Sunscreen isn't a bad idea if it's a clear day.

Can I buy maple syrup to take home?

Yes! The Park Store sells maple syrup and maple products. These tend to be popular, so grab yours early if you've got your eye on a bottle.

What food is available?

The festival offers a pancake breakfast with real maple syrup, available for purchase on-site. The Park Store also has treats and drinks. If you're a snacker, bring extras in your bag — you'll be out for the full day.

Is this trip good for families?

Absolutely. The festival is built for all ages, with wagon rides, a trackless train, the Maple Mystery Challenge, face painting, giant games, puppet shows, and a storybook walk along the Wetland Trail. Kids will have plenty to keep them engaged between the guided hike and festival activities.

Is this trip good for solo travellers?

This is one of the best trips to do solo. The ActiveDays format is designed for connecting with new people, and the combination of a group hike and festival gives you plenty of natural opportunities to chat with fellow travellers — or enjoy some quiet time on the trails. Your call.

Is the site accessible?

Terra Cotta has accessible washroom facilities. Some trails are flat and well-maintained, while others involve more rugged Escarpment terrain. If you have specific accessibility needs, please reach out to us in advance and we'll help you plan accordingly.

Where is Terra Cotta Conservation Area?

Terra Cotta is located in Halton Hills, about an hour from downtown Toronto, right in the heart of the Niagara Escarpment. The 485-acre park features mature forests, streams, ponds, and wetlands, and connects to the Bruce Trail network.

What if the weather is bad?

The festival runs rain or shine. Many demonstrations have covered areas, but you'll be spending most of the day outdoors. Dress for the forecast and pack a rain jacket just in case. If conditions become unsafe, we'll communicate any changes as soon as possible.

What time will we return to Toronto?

Return times depend on the specific trip schedule. Check your booking confirmation for exact departure and return times.
