What is the Spring Tonic Maple Syrup Festival?
Spring Tonic is an annual celebration of maple syrup season hosted by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority and the Rotary Club of Barrie. Running for over 30 years, the festival combines maple syrup education, a hearty pancake breakfast, and family-friendly activities at the Tiffin Conservation Area.
What's included with festival admission?
Your admission includes a pancake and sausage breakfast with fresh maple syrup (served until 2 pm), maple syrup tours demonstrating Indigenous, pioneer, and modern production methods, tractor-wagon rides through the forest, live music, craft activities, exotic animal encounters at the Zoo to You show, and dog agility demonstrations. Some activities like bird box building may have a small additional materials fee.
What is an ActiveDays trip?
ActiveDays trips are designed for inclusive outdoor experiences where you can participate at your own pace. Join the group for festival activities, wander the trails solo, or simply find a sunny spot to enjoy the atmosphere. There's no set itinerary—the day is yours to shape however you like.
What type of bus is used for this trip?
This trip runs on a school bus, which helps keep costs low and the trip accessible. The bus is heated, so you'll be comfortable on the ride up and back.
Are there hiking trails available?
Yes. Tiffin Conservation Area has 11 km of looped trails winding through wetlands, forests, meadows, and ancient glacial lakebeds. The terrain is mostly flat and well-maintained, with boardwalks through wetter sections. You can combine festival activities with a forest walk whenever you like.
Are the trails and festival accessible?
The Hawk and Maple Valley Trails are wheelchair accessible, and accessible washrooms are available throughout the site. All-terrain wheelchairs can be arranged free of charge by contacting the NVCA in advance.
What food is available?
The pancake and sausage breakfast is included with admission and served until 2 pm, along with juice and coffee. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options are available in limited quantities on a first-come basis. No other food is sold on site, so pack snacks if you think you'll want more throughout the day.
Can I buy maple syrup to take home?
Absolutely. Tiffin produces its own maple syrup on site, and it sells out quickly. Bottles are available in various sizes, and maple candy and other products are also for sale. Bring cash to be safe.
What should I bring?
Wear sturdy footwear—trails can be muddy in spring. Dress in layers for changeable April weather. Bring a reusable water bottle (refill stations are available), sunscreen, and cash for maple syrup purchases. The festival runs rain or shine, so check the forecast and pack accordingly.
How long is the trip from Toronto?
Tiffin Conservation Area is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Toronto, located near Utopia in Simcoe County.
