Self-Guided

Rondeau Provincial Park Day Trip from Kitchener-Waterloo

Rondeau is Ontario's second-oldest provincial park, established in 1894, and it sits on an eight-kilometre crescent-shaped sand spit reaching into Lake Erie. The shape (a cuspate sandspit) is one of the best examples in North America.

Carolinian forest, beach, and birds

Rondeau protects one of Ontario's last stands of old-growth Carolinian forest. Tulip trees, sassafras, shagbark hickory, and black walnut grow here, supported by Lake Erie's warming effect on the peninsula. The park holds more species at risk than any other in Ontario, including the prothonotary warbler, Fowler's toad, and the five-lined skink (Ontario's only lizard). It's also a major birding destination, with over 335 species recorded. June puts you into breeding season, with the forest full of song.

What the day looks like

Seven trails, all flat, several on boardwalks. The Tulip Tree Trail runs through old-growth forest and is fully accessible. Black Oak Trail cuts through rare oak savannah. Spicebush Trail is the one for wildflowers. If you want distance, Harrison Trail runs eight kilometres out toward the old lighthouse.

When you've had enough of the forest, there are eleven kilometres of sandy beach. Lake Erie is the warmest of the Great Lakes, and the water is generally swimmable by mid-June.

Visitor Centre and snack bar

The Visitor Centre has live animals, a birding window, and naturalists on hand. The park store and snack bar near the bay side serves grill food, snacks, and ice cream, so you can break up the day with lunch.

How the bus part works

This is a self-guided transit trip. Parkbus picks you up in Kitchener-Waterloo, drops you at Rondeau, and gets you home that evening. No group itinerary, no scheduled stops. The park is yours to explore at your pace. Bring a swimsuit, water, sunscreen, layers, lunch or cash for the snack bar, and binoculars if you have them.
