The best time to go
It starts in the north in late September and reaches the city by late October. Each place is at its best for about two weeks.
The sugar maples turn first. Along Highway 60 they peak around September 27 on average. The yellow birch and poplar follow into October, and the tamaracks turn gold last, in mid to late October.
Muskoka, Parry Sound and the Bruce Peninsula usually peak a week or two after Algonquin. Think red maples over dark water, and colour along the cliffs above Georgian Bay.
The Niagara Escarpment, Elora and the Rouge turn last. If you miss the north, this is your second chance, and it is the shortest ride.
Every year is a little different, and the dates move by a week or so with the weather. Algonquin timing is from the Friends of Algonquin Park.
Built around the leaves
We plan the fall calendar around the leaves. The Algonquin trips run in late September and early October, when the maples turn. Trips closer to the city run later, into late October, as the colour moves south.
The stops are chosen for the view: lookouts, cliff edges and river gorges where you see a whole hillside of colour, not just the tree beside the road.
And nobody has to drive. No fall weekend traffic, no full parking lot, no one missing the view because they are watching the road. You watch it go by from the window.
