About the Othello Tunnels

Set within Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, the Othello Tunnels offer a rare combination of dramatic scenery, easy walking, and fascinating history. The 3.5‑kilometre round‑trip trail follows a decommissioned section of the Kettle Valley Railway, guiding visitors through:

  • A series of hand‑carved granite railway tunnels
  • Elevated bridges crossing the turquoise Coquihalla River
  • Sheer canyon walls shaped by millions of years of rushing water
  • Forested pathways that stay cool and shaded even in summer

The trail is mostly flat and well‑maintained, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for an accessible adventure.

A Look Back in Time

The tunnels were completed in 1914 under the direction of chief engineer Andrew McCulloch, whose love of Shakespeare inspired the names of nearby stations - Othello, Lear, Iago, and more. This section of railway was considered an engineering triumph of its era, requiring precision blasting through solid granite and the construction of multiple bridges in a narrow canyon.

After the railway was decommissioned, the route was transformed into a public trail, allowing visitors to experience the same dramatic landscapes that once challenged early railway builders.
