Arrowhead Provincial Park is our favourite winter destination - and for a good reason! There are multiple activities availalbe for all abilities, including skiing, skating, snowshoeing, winter hiking and bird watching. Park's facilities are perfect for a winter visit. We offer 2 types of trips this year: our regularly scheduled bus which arrives to Arrowhead in the morning and leaves the park in the afternoon, as well as Fire and Ice special, which arrives to the park in the afternoon, and leaves in the evening.

For our winter trips, we may choose to cancel a bus due to weather conditions that make visit to the park unsafe or not enjoyable due to trail closures. We generally make this decisions in consultation with park staff. In case of bus cancellation, we will offer an option of a full refund.

Bus Drop Off Location

The bus will drop you off at Arrowhead Visitor Center (Birches parking lot), which is spacious and heated. The facilities include:

  • - washrooms
  • - a spacious dining area with panoramic windows and a fireplace. Bring your own lunch or dinner!
  • - lockers
  • - basic snacks and drinks for sale, along with souvenirs
  • - rentals of skis, skates and snowshoes
  • - info center

The visitor center is conveniently located within a short distance to the famous skating trail (about 5 min walk), as well as ski and snowshoe trails.

If you are skating:

Bring your own skates or rent at the park. Helmets are recommended on the trail, but not mandatory. The skating trail is located approximately 300m / 5 minutes away from the visitor center. Your skate pass is included in your Parkbus ticket.

If you are skiing:

Arrowhead is an exceptional cross-country ski destination. There are 28 km of classic ski trails and 16km of skate ski trails, ranging from beginner to expert level. You can bring your own skis on the bus or rent skis in the park. Your ski pass is included in your Parkbus ticket.

If you are bird watching:

Bring bird seed! As an exception to the general rule, the park allows feeding birds in the winter, and there is a good chance you will be able to hand-feed chicadees and other birds. Please do not feed anything other than birdseed.

Hiking or snowshoeing?

If you are hiking or snowshoeing: bring your own snowshoes or rent them in the park. Hiking is allowed on many trails, but not on skate/ski trails.

Day planning tip: depending on the weather conditions, you may be able to participate in more than one activity. On Fire and Ice days, the ice trail closes at 3pm for resurfacing and reopens towards 6pm. On these days we run Fire and Ice special, so you could ski or hike the afternoon right after you arrive, then take a break in the visitor center and then skate once the Fire and Ice special begins at 6pm.

Ultimately, every day may be unique, so be sure to consult with park staff and check official park page for current snow and ice conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if there is no snow? Do you cancel buses because of the weather?

There is a possibility that we will cancel a bus due to weather conditions that make visit to the park unsafe or not enjoyable due to trail closures. We generally make this decisions in consultation with park staff. In case of bus cancellation, we will offer an option of a full refund, or a rebooking to a different date, if available.

What if we get too cold? Is there a place to warm up? Washrooms?

Yes! Arrowhead's brand new visitor center is spacious and has all the facilities under one roof! There are also additionnal warm-up shelters scattered throughout the park. Park also maintains several campfires to stay warm outside!

There are also heated flush washrooms available near the skating trail.

Are there places to get food?

Park sells hot and warm drinks, chips and chocolates at the visitor center. We highly recommend that you do not rely on that option and bring lunch and drink with you to be self sufficient and since the park may discontinue snack service at any time..

Are equipment rentals included with the bus ticket?

We do not include equipment rentals with Arrowhead tickets because there are many different options available, and it would be difficult to organize rentals for everyone in advance. However, Arrowhead bus tickets include park entrance as well as trail passes that are valid for cross-country, snowshoe and skate trails.
